I'd be impressed if one of my religion & politics students knew that, too. As for the framers' possible mindfulness of Europe's history of relig conflict, there's a passage in Madison's 1785 "Memorial" which might be relevant (founders.archives.gov/documents/Ma...). I quoted it in a recent article

Yesterday, when @efbrockman.bsky.social & I were driving back from Fredericksburg on 281 between Evant and Hamilton, we saw this wall cloud (?) looming ahead of us. After checking the radar, we turned back and pulled in to a gas station just as the storm hit. Torrential rain, wicked winds. 1/2
