In case you want proof, here's an article i wrote years ago about Victorian eugenicists wanting to found a religion centred on "the human body is god". (I'll cheerfully admit that it has a genuinely terrible title. I don't know what I was thinking.) www.literatureandscience.org/wp-content/u...

Man, the Victorian eugenics pseudo-science + Techbro eugenics pseudo-science venn is really is just a perfect circle, isn't it?

With the 1st trailer for Mamoru Hosoda's 'Scarlet' coming out, it's a nice time to remember that Hosoda (rather than Hayao Miyazaki) was originally hired to direct 'Howl's Moving Castle' (2004) for Studio Ghibli!

Here's some early storyboards for Hosoda's version:

So, quite obviously everything is insane & on fire right now [gestures broadly to everything being insane & on fire] BUT if you're interested, I have a new article in this month's BBC History on the Victorian love affair with cocaine. www.historyextra.com/magazine/cur...

Look, I'm generally on board with early 20th C. predictions of the future, but i take this swipe at Millennial fashion choices personally.

Not to be tacky & recommend my own work, but if you're interested in Cream in the context of 19thC cocaine addiction then I do talk about him a bit here:

This - from 'The Horse in History (1908)' - is a genuinely amazing little piece of Edwardian futurism! It's not quite 2030 yet, but (in my defence) the book did tell me to comment! 😄🐎

Aw shucks! 😊 Here, have a poster for cocaine wine (circa 1910).

Some very seasonal art nouveau!

Henri Rivière was heavily influenced by the Japanese ukiyo-e tradition & in 1902 he produced the series 'Thirty-six Views of the Eiffel Tower' as a homage to Katsushika Hokusai's 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' (1832). 🌨️

More seriously though, Susan Zieger's book 'Inventing the addict' might be a good place for them to start. She's really good at laying out how debates about substance use (& which specific substances) changed across the 19th century.
