Eye Surgeon specialising in correcting vision; Bondi Junction & Miranda in Sydney. #lasereyesurgery #LASIK #SmartSight #ICL #Keratoconus #Cataract
First talk done in Darwin. I spoke at the Schwind Laser User Meeting on one of my favourite subjects: customising laser vision correction for unusual eyes. Something new for this year is Foresight software, which allows us to simulate outcomes with different laser treatment plans. #lasereyesurgery

Improvement in short-sightedness (myopia) from -3.25D to -2.50D translates to going from very blurred distance vision to very blurred distance vision; still nowhere near able to drive without correction.

This young man dreamed of serving his country, but severe #astigmatism with intolerance of glasses & contacts held him back.
He had #LASIK & now proudly wears the uniform.
#Lasereyesurgery doesn't just improve sight, it transforms lives.
If your vision is holding you back, let's talk.

Lest We Forget.

This Anzac Day, I remember and honour my great-grandfather, Brigadier Edward Thomas “Eddie” Harnett, and his son, my great-uncle Flight Sergeant Terence “Terry” Harnett, whose service spanned both world wars.

🚁She used to see air traffic second.
👩‍✈️Laser vision correction improved how she flies.

Lauren is a commercial helicopter pilot who wore glasses for high astigmatism. See her story.

📘 What can an elite cricketer teach eye surgeons?

While reviewing “Tested” by Pat Cummins for the AAO, I didn’t expect to revisit so many pearls of wisdom that are directly applicable to improving clinical practice.

It’s a quiet masterclass in performing under pressure & recovering from failure.

I suspect the framing of the question is the problem (asking for a binary answer). I think some surgeons would interpret this as a personal or emotional toll that interferes with their function. That’s very different. Henry Marsh reminds us all well of the tolls of surgery.

I maintain that the best emails are citation alerts. They don’t require any action. They show that other people are using your research and building on it.

This particular alert refers to a subject of great interest: how do we make cataract surgery as comfortable and relaxing as possible?

The vulnerability of PubMed under RFK Jnr has been a serious concern of mine for some time. The head of DHHS is an antivax conspiracy theorist; it follows that he disagrees with a lot of published medical science, and he has significant control over access. It’s a global problem now. #MedSky

Here’s the view I had. I can’t work out how to post a gif.

The best part of my day was seeing 15yo Caoimhe Bray hit a paddle scoop for four in the NSW v SA WNCL. The bowler, Megan Schutt, is ranked #3 by the ICC for ODI’s. Amazing young talent.

Ah yes. The “Chevalier” John Taylor. Does this description remind you at all of any current and former US President???

Happy to share that I was a Silver Reviewer for the Journal of Refractive Surgery last year, for “quantity, quality & timeliness of reviews for the journal”.

JRS is definitely a top journal in my field, & it’s great to contribute to it. I was really happy to be allocated some top papers to review.

You might be specifically referring to the bush stone curlew, aka murderbird, aka “Narcissus of the bird set” as per @mwhitbourn.bsky.social

I must be one of a niche cohort of people who have a Bin Chicken SC mug, and a bin chicken tote bag. 👋👋👋

Another lovely gift from a lovely patient was this amazing bin chicken tote bag that she made herself. It’s a very, very Sydney image and I’m very honoured to receive it.

An unexpected but lovely gift from a happy post-op cataract patient. He and his wife grow a lot of their own produce. My Dad was a small country town GP & this was normal. Didn’t expect it in the city though. It will definitely get used.

Met a lovely woman in her 70’s at a party. Of course the conversation turns to kaleidoscopes. When I show her this video, she grabs the phone & shows someone, saying “if you want to know what’s it’s like to drop acid, it’s this!”
