Help! I have lots of slides on behavioural sex differences in old meta-analyses. I have been trying to update them. Sometimes successfully (albeit often smaller effects!) but sometimes unsuccessfully because there's nothing more recent ... do I cut ALL the old ones? Or only the superseded ones?

A series of studies shows that the dehumanising language in academic and media descriptions of autism directly drive dehumanisation of autistic people, and subsequent social rejection of autistic people and willingness to use harmful and risky 'treatments'.
Big picture N. primarily by elevating moral disengagement across all types of dehumanization; Dehumanization r reduces support for inclusion and increases support for remediation 2, Humanness appraisals function as upstream drivers of moral disengagement, secondary-emotion denial uniquely depresses inclusion directly, and support for eugenics does not reliably moderate these pathways but seems to directly act on noral disengagement specifically. 3. Dehumanizing rhetoric in reporting of autism research facilitates moral disengagement, through denying autistic people core human traits. Dehumanizing autism research and the way it is reported in the media may facilitate moral disengagement that increases the acceptability of harm from intervention

Writing this up, @dr-liz-evans.bsky.social challenged us to make it a model paper for intervention pilot papers - she had single handedly created a new acceptability-feasibility framework for this kind of fieldwork/school-based pilot!
All 9 of our feasibility indicators were fulfilled (see Supplementary Materials S4, Table S1). 1) Acceptability will be discussed further in Section 3.3. 2) Implementation: we received approval from URACCAN, the ministry of education (MINED), community leaders and head teachers. 3) Recruitment was successful, none of the parents opted their children out from participating and all eligible students gave written assent to participate. 4) Retention rates were good; attrition rates were low (10 %), all participants lost at post-test were not in school that day; none of them actively withdrew their participation. 5) Data collection feasibility was deemed good, all data were collected withing the planned timescale, except qualitative follow-up data which was collected 2 weeks later than planned. Further, most participants provided complete or near-complete data, with less than 3.91 % missing overall (SD = 12.9). 6) Attendance and engagement was deemed good; attendance rates were high (90 %), and engagement was good, which was also demonstrated by most participants (81 %) recalling key messages of the intervention at follow-up. 7) Intervention fidelity is described in more detail in section 3.1 and Supplementary Materials S2. 8) No adverse events were reported during the intervention. Lastly, 9) teachers indicated the intervention would be well suited in a class called ‘creciendo en valores’ (growing in values), indicating curricular coherence.

And while we weren't powered to detect small or medium effects, we did see one of our main targets (perceived reality of social media) was significantly impacted at post test in the intervention group...

The @wellcometrust.bsky.social therefore funded a pilot phase project for intervention development. We got great qualitative feedback - teenagers and teachers got a lot out of the program, and the facilitators (and program co-developers) did too...
Students showed good recall of program key messages The two facilitators said they enjoyed preparing and delivering the sessions. They stressed the importance of the topics, as adolescents worry a lot about appearance on social media and believed that these sessions would also help them in the future. One of them stated that she enjoyed interacting with the students and even though she was apprehensive about approaching the students during the activities in the beginning, it became her favourite part. The facilitators also believed they themselves learned a lot: “I was going through something like, I no like see myself fat and is like some of them comment them and is like, it come for change me thinking to well, my mentality is that I no have to pay that mind much because I mean I look good how I is … you know my appearance is me - I unique how I is and I no have to put much mind to it [I am unique as I am and I do not have to focus on it]. So yeah, it was really helpful.”

A wider analysis suggests that changing economic pressures, the belief that thinness leads to success, and increased access to/marketing of calorie-dense foods, all create an environment that is specific to Fiji and specific to promoting weight gain AND purging behaviours.
It's not just TV!
