Some day I will comm art for this fic. And I will start with this scene which I can picture so clearly. It's all cold blue tones except for Isa's eyes and the harsh gold/orange of the numbers counting up
“Reset the clock.” Axel looks up at the digital clock displayed above the hangar windows. Mere days were counted before this attack, and as the numbers roll back, Axel has to swallow hard. Victories are still victories, but most of their hope now rides on finding a permanent solution. Isa is still standing by the windows, his arms folded behind his back. His expression is flat as the numbers above his head drop back down to zero. For a second, the clock is reset, and then the count starts again. 1, 2, 3… As the seconds tick higher, Isa turns and meets Axel’s gaze. For a long moment, they look at each other, and then Isa turns away. He moves to the Marshal’s side, listening to orders, being the senior ranger, and Axel… Axel’s flush with victory for a fight he didn’t take part in, for a war he left behind, and he feels the gap between them crack just a hair wider.

The rain falls in sheets, hiding the distant hills in gray fog. The hum of something unnatural from the lake fades in the wash of water and the rumble of the clouds. The world could be them alone. If She had any power left, maybe Junior could buy this as her apology: a moment of peace for them to talk. He snorts at his own thoughts, bitter with the truth. She has nothing and feasts now on another of his friends. “What.” Thancred is not asking a question. He is telling Junior to spit it out and leave him alone. Junior looks at him without turning his head, his eyes the same color as the clouds above. Unlike them, he has no water left to let fall. “‘The path is paved with the dead.’ It makes us sound like martyrs, doesn’t it? The old crone may be right, but she’s an idiot.” His tone is thick with derision and he crosses his arms over his chest. “Maybe she should lay herself down upon it next if she deems it so important.” Silence. He watches Thancred from the corner of his eye, tail twitching. After a long moment, he looks back at Junior. Very…carefully, he asks, “Do you think she was wrong to follow the call?” He scoffs immediately. “Anyone willing to throw themselves into the embrace of Dear Mother Hydaelyn is a fool. I could have told her what it would get her. I did tell her to keep running with me. And now it’s turned out just the same again: fuel to the goddess that won’t even treat Her favorites with grace!” Dark hair and dull eyes and blood so thick it’s gone black even as the sky above burns red, red, red. Impact. That’s all Junior processes at first, and then his ass hits the ground. His cheek is stinging and he spits on the ground. Without a word, he lunges back up.
