feel like a hack constantly beating the drum of like: this stuff is poisonous! our discourse has been poisoned. many of the most powerful brokers in silicon valley have been radicalized by their own algorithms & are funding moral decay. it's sad and...boring! but this is a lot of whats being built!

I for sure learned phonics but I was taught to read by my dad before I was taught in school so it's hard for me to remember precisely what was taught in the classroom. I think it was phonics but I could be wrong.

It sounds like it was largely a 2000s development, so anyone older than 30 seems unlikely to have learned it even in places where it's taught now.

Nope! The same thing happened in Canada but was walked back a couple years ago. Most provinces have gone back to phonics and abandoned cueing entirely but NS just added phonics and kept the cueing in the curriculum, so it’s unclear how many NS students are actually being taught to read correctly.

Much of the hand wringing, imo, is over a critic explicitly saying they are judging the moral fabric of a piece of art because of the tools used to create it and it’s making some folks feel uncomfortable and shamed. The people who feel that way should sit with that feeling.

I am using "shitpost" liberally. I know there was a purchase agreement. But he didn't actually want to follow through on it. He had it thrown together in a huff because he was angry Twitter's CEO asked him to tone it down a bit.
