It was great to moderate this #UkraineActionSummit panel on why U.S. security assistance to Ukraine is essential (and why it should resume). Thanks to Laura Cooper and @atlanticcouncil.bsky.social’s Amb. John Herbst for joining me!

Big day in the Senate as these bills passed through the Foreign Relations Committee:

-Sanctions on China for supporting Russia's war on Ukraine

-Strengthening the REPO Act to transfer frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine

-Designation of Russia as a State Sponsor of Terrorism

Time to pass them!

Here’s something that hasn’t changed: a record 73% of Republicans voters want to see sanctions on Russia and arms to Ukraine. By refusing to act, Trump is flouting his own voters.

What a pleasant surprise to walk into a bar and see my former @razomforukraine.org colleague Allegra on @jeopardyofficial.bsky.social tonight! Go Allegra!

Aw, is someone nervous about the U.S. helping Ukraine strike Russian oil refineries?

I’m also loving how many local DC spots are represented at DCA now. Solid State Books, Atlas Brewery, Zeke’s coffee, all favorites of mine.

It’s a beautiful day in Washington, our government has shut down, and I’ve got a hiking trip to get to. Perfect time to try taking a @bikeshare.bsky.social e-bike to the airport!

Split-screen at the White House tonight—pro-Palestine protest chanting “from the river to the sea” and a handful of pro-Trump demonstrators trying to drown them out playing the song “America f*** yeah” and Zach Brown Band saying “Palestine isn’t real, name the first president of Palestine.”

Here's a forthcoming book I'm excited for—JUN FUJITA: BEHIND THE CAMERA. For a decade I've been fascinated by the story of 1920s Chicago's Japanese-American photojournalist who shot mobsters, dodged internment, and beautifully captured a city in tumult.

Europe’s single greatest defense asset is Ukraine. The largest and most experienced military in Europe is Ukraine. If Europe wants to be secure, it needs Ukraine at the heart of its security architecture.

Busy night, I’ll be doing an AMA on Zoom with @razomforukraine.org before heading over to BBC News at 10pm ET to talk Zelenskyy and Trump at UNGA and drones over the skies of Europe. Join me for either or both!

Suspicion between the Balts and the US is mutual, Rachman writes, after seeing a reminder that Trump's White House is willing to side with the Russians posted in the Estonian foreign ministry.

Trump says he’s ready for sanctions on Russia if:

-NATO members stop buying Russian oil (Hungary and Slovakia sure aren’t stopping)
-They put tariffs on China (the EU certainly won’t)

These are poison pills. Trump doesn’t plan to sanction Russia. Congress has to force him.

New! Rep. Don Bacon becomes the first Republican to sign on to Rep. Gregory Meeks’s discharge petition to force a vote on the UKRAINE SUPPORT ACT. This is the strongest legislation out there right now to arm Ukraine and sanction Russia—and the kind of leverage Trump needs for peace.

There’s a truck playing an ad in support of Trump’s DC takeover, parked downtown on Farragut Square. Paid for by “Citizens for Sanity.”

“President Trump says lock up the criminals…and it’s working. Democrats say lock up your car/bike/packages/the shelves in every store.”

The last few days in particular it’s been impossible to go a few blocks in DC without coming across some kind of heavy security presence. I’ve seen more police overall, DEA squads at night, and yesterday near a baseball game 40+ national guard plus 3 MRAPs and 2 humvees.

To get some semblance of peace, the world is flattering Trump & telling him what he wants to hear at every turn. But here's a much-needed sanity check from @nytimes.com Thomas Friedman.

There may be a parallel reality in the White House, but the truth is in Ukraine.

Good morning from Berlin, where I’m flying home to Washington, DC. In about 12 hours, Trump sits down with Putin in Alaska.

Read today’s @nickkristof.bsky.social column in @nytimes.com to understand the tremendous stakes at this meeting.

The Trump effect. New @gallup.com poll finds a record number of Ukrainians doubt they’ll ever be accepted into NATO while disapproval of the President of the United States skyrockets.

Full poll here 👇 Trump’s damage to the U.S.-Ukraine relationship is immense.

I'm reminded today of @zygaro.bsky.social's @atlanticcouncil.bsky.social report on Kremlin court politics, where he reported that far from Medvedev's rumored drunkenness, his boorish posts are part of a cultivated consultant-driven fascist image to position him as Putin's successor.

Medvedev responds to Trump by doubling down with even more nuclear threats, alluding to the "Dead Hand" system to ensure Russian nukes launch even if Russian leadership is taken out in a first strike.
