However, as the mayor’s agenda becomes increasingly radical—or more mainstream, if you like—we see a series of new policies and attitudes playing out. Of course the city is toying with the idea of harassing the Catholic church for its bigoted stances on gay marriage and abortion, and a few details that were no doubt written to seem over the top in 2018 (like sex education for first graders taught exclusively by trans teachers) impress from their sheer prescience in 2022.

The acting Mayor was a gay bastard…so much so that it had been part of his campaign slogan when he ran in the primaries against Hoynes. Hoynes had won in a landslide, despite acting Mayor Lawson being gay, black, and “underprivileged” (defined as having no father, but waltzing through schools on minority quotas and lazy teachers, and getting into Columbia on the strength of a “Why Iran is the best country on Earth” essay—that was the actual title).

I rolled my eyes, not impressed. I managed to ignore how bad the smell was. “Just like every other thousand-year Reich.” Hoynes’ eyes flared, burning red with literal fire. “No. Not like them. We know what we’re doing. All the others were cowards and hypocrites. The Nazis and the old Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly. They continued to claim that there was paradise just around the corner. “Bullshit. We know that no one ever seizes power and intends to relinquish it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship to safeguard a revolution; one makes revolution to establish dictatorship. The object of power? Is power.”

When the MP5 ran dry, Baracus took a single long step forward and plucked it from Alex’s hands. He waved it at Alex like it was a toy confiscated from a naughty child. “If you cannot be responsible with your toys, you cannot have them,” he said jovially in his deep Jamaican voice. He flung it casually aside. Alex clamored up the length of the couch to escape the bokor.

The law says nothing about taking baby parts from abortion and burning them in your own fire pit to worship your demonic deity—maybe improper disposal of medical waste, but that would be thrown out on the grounds of religious persecution. Don’t give me that look—that’s half of my problem in the current prosecution, even though child sacrifice is illegal. You have no idea how much the law means to me.”

If you’re wondering that I should have seen this coming sooner, then you haven’t noted the similarities between Hoynes and the political stance of the average Democrat politician. The RICO idea had been suggested before. Using the law to force a homosexual agenda on Churches that didn’t want to perform said weddings? Homeschooling had been a target of the left in New York City since the concept began. And yet, despite fascist methods and pissing off voters left right and center, Hoynes was gaining in the polls. I had always chalked that up to bad polling and the reliability of Manhattan elitists who would vote Democrat even if the candidate had personally threatened to kill them all after the election. But magic and politics? “I think you were correct back there,” I said. “He’s too much of an incompetent to really get elected. He’s using magic to get things done, manipulate the polls, and probably would use it to get elected again. You heard the bokor. The Mayor needs me dead to pay off his debts to his Friends on the Other Side. Election season more or less starts in a few months.” “Really? He’s using black magic to win elections?” Alex asked. He paused a moment. “Okay. Yeah. That really does make too much sense. Any ideas on how to take him down?” I shrugged. “Prayer and bullets?”

At the same time, Hoynes pushed the public school system to start sex education in the first grade. The special sex educators consisted entirely of transsexuals and transvestites. The special “education” hadn’t started yet, but every mutter of pulling children out of public schools and into homeschooling was met with threats of calling Child Protective Services and sending the police to people’s home to arrest the offending homeschoolers. No cop I know would do that, but there were some people in CPS I could see doing that – to their mind, it was easier than investigating abusive parents, and the law-abiding wouldn’t put up as much of a fight. Hoynes argued that “I’m a Libertarian! Children should be allowed to make their decisions about sex with all of the information at their disposal. How dare you take away their right to make an informed choice about what they do with their body!” If you think that there’s a disconnect between the public stances of “pedophiles bad” (but shouldn’t be prosecuted) and “teach seven-year-olds sex” you’re not the only one.

The awkward moment where the author, who's been pushing the "progressives support pedophiles" narrative, tries to make the evil Democrat mayor look bad for... fighting against pedophile enablers.
The policies in question were also getting darker and darker. Hoynes was in talks with the DA – Carlton’s boss – to press charges against the Catholic church under RICO, the same laws used against the mafia. He argued that the Catholic church hid pedophiles. This would have been fine if all of the cases he cited weren’t decades old and prosecuting them would violate every statute of limitations on the books. It wouldn’t result in the prosecution of any child molester, but it would result in the confiscation of every church in the city and all of their bank accounts, property, etc.

I don't think this guy knows what pronouns are
The only conclusion with the facts to hand was that the warlock was the primary adversary in this case. She, he, or it was out to get me—since it was typically a male pronoun, that would be my assumption. The warlock probably had a hand in breaking out Ormeno from the nuthouse. If I were to make a guess, if Ormeno wasn’t possessed, Ormeno had been granted a few powers and abilities by said warlock.

While “Harlem” is generally considered a black neighborhood, that isn’t the extent of it. Technically, that Harlem is West Harlem. That area has had a renaissance, the Apollo Theater, and several strong cultural movements that more or less ended when the Black Panthers came to town. (For the record, the Black Panther political movement came several months after the superhero of the same name. The Marvel character debuted in July 1966, while the Black Panther Party was created that October. In 1969, they were in New York and trying to blow up buildings).
