When reviewing centres to make a choice for your child, ask 'How much of my fee stays in this centre?'

This is appalling.

I have run centres. I have worked for a regulator, and worked in the development of the regulations. The issue isn’t as simple as commentators new to the issue imply. Yes, resource the regulators well and guarantee ongoing funding. But, resource centres well too.

There are, in some cases, multiple agencies required to be notified if there is an issue at a centre. It is not unheard of to have more than one agency turn up for a spot check on the same day for different requirements.

But it’s not just one regulator. The sector is currently subject to approximately 50 federal, state and local government laws, regulations, rules and codes. With that number of regulators, managing a service is complex. Compliance reporting and rules are often incredibly complex as well.

Children are homeless too

Six. You missed one. Children. If we don’t fix parenting support, early childhood education, seamless education, child safety, inclusion support, mental health, child homelessness, out of home care systems, the justice system, and our damn attitudes to children, then the future is really compromised

Quiet south of the river; spent longer getting a democracy sausage (aren’t P&Cs amazing) than in the queue to vote.

Brilliant. I once took a group to a bookstore, gave them a budget and challenged them to negotiate with each other to decide on the books that would add up to the total budget. Found one of them at the counter trying to negotiate a discount.

These are children.
They are being failed.
Focusing on the arrest fails to look at the whole child, something other laws in that state insist is done.
