Mother, physician & researcher of humans' health care & behaviour. INFJ.
Exhausted advocate for nuanced discussions and trauma-informed dialogue.
Peer-review- a well intended but imperfect process.
In 2014 @thesgem.bsky.social & @jeremyfaust.bsky.social broke down issues w/ PR & little has changed since.
Would LOVE for these docs to revisit this topic in the era of Muskonion X, RFK Jr. & a roaring anti-science movement- where to go from here?

My thoughts on #PeerReview.
Gate-keeping places of knowledge exchange does not help bring more ppl into respectful discussions about #health, #science & #medicine.
(It's also pretty $$ w/o quality control)

@robynurback.bsky.social, couple of things:
1) Selfies w/ US governors/legislators are not "meetings"
2) Premier Smith's track record as a good faith diplomat is weak at best (she built her brand on an "us first, you suck" approaches)
3) The feds certainly have "win/win" back-channel diplomacy on OT

Nope, they didn't mention it.

@heart-sisters.bsky.social is a brilliant woman's heart health communicator & advocate.

I contributed to this essay on what 'recovery' means to patients vs. MDs several years ago.

The gap in def'n is considerable and we haven't closed it yet.

Pls read & lets commit to valuing patient experience.
How long does it take to heal from open heart surgery?

Why do doctors' answers to that question cover such an impossibly wide range (6 wks -1 yr)?

And few if any of those answers even mention the impact of psychosocial recuperation.

It's that time of year in every ER!
Every year we volunteer to cover the hospital for our friends and colleagues who want to be home with their families for Christmas.
Lots of bad news out there, let's instead celebrate what brings us together this holiday season!

Discussing Person of the Year

Person 1: How about the French woman who sacrificed herself for the sake of survivors everywhere to change the narrative about rape? ‘Shame must switch sides’ and all?

Person 2: Nah, let’s go with the rapist

This infuriates me.
He's a rapist & a thief.
He may be president b/c we have a dysfunctional info landscape & b/c America hates women but come on, "Person of the Year" ?!?!
He was elected president, but an editorial board has a choice as a voice with import not to valourize & validate predators.
President-elect Trump, who has both derided Time magazine and pined for its approval, was named the publication’s person of the year on Thursday.

He also received the title in 2016 and now joins a select group of people who have been chosen twice.
Donald Trump Is Time’s Person of the Year
Mr. Trump also received the title in 2016, after his first presidential election victory. He has had a tempestuous relationship with the publication.

Let's chat #PeerReview.
PR is an old convention intended to serve a resource stewardship & quality control function. But does it really do either? What are the opportunity & real costs of PR? What are the real benefits/harms or PR?

Clarification- $1.5 BILLION USD.
That is the cost of peer review.
Bananas.
@thesgem.bsky.social
Fact: Peer review comes at extraordinary opportunity cost. In 2020, the time dedicated to peer review by academic/clinical professionals was $1.5 USD!!!!
We are not getting value for money in the peer review enterprise.

#PeerReview is a pet topic of mine.
In #academia, we lean hard on it but it is rife w/ conflict of interest, bias & exploitive practices.
It's a practice that began for practical reasons, was embraced b/c it made authors & experts feel validated, persists b/c of tradition, not evidence.

Insulin in #T1D is life-sustaining.
A country that believes in universal access to essential services should not have families impoverished due to the costs of #diabetes, but it does.
