A rather somber piece of cartography. A map with details of every soldier from the city of Toronto and fell in WW2.

Really brings into perspective the sacrifice paid citizenry of Toronto for the greater good. Also a morbid reminder of how compact the city was back then.

In some ways the debate around sampling seems archaic in a world of generative AI, but it also was an indicator of all that was to come b/c the argument always get framed in terms of “fairness” but legislated in favor of the powerful.

I remember Diana Buttu's writing from 20 years ago - a Palestinian Canadian who tried to help. She articulates exactly how today, the same problems are more acute, and the interlocutors suffer from the same myopia. Plus ça change...

There should be zero duty to serve data centre loads. For once, make corporations pay for some of their their so-called "externalities."

This is the main thing that concerns me about having moved back to Canada - we may not have gone far enough.
Multiple times this year I’ve had coffee with fellow immigrants who grew up in corrupt third world countries and the shared sentiment has been that Americans don’t understand how bad things are going to get.

Alpha Centauri still stands alone among 4X games, I think. The factions have philosophies, not flavour. And they all have to grapple with ethical questions other 4X games ignore, because the ecosystem is a character - not just a substrate for the mechanics.

This tension runs throughout so many tabletop roleplaying games.

And unsurprisingly, one game that handles it well is... LANCER (whose co-creator I'm quoting here). It has the benefit of a narrative justification for imposing structure on combat: when you get in the robot, you use different rules.
game design thoughts: writing tactics role playing games is hard. if i were writing a wargame, it would be easier. i'll post a little thread here

Every tenth matters. Don't give up.
Say goodbye to 1.5°C. But remember, the next target is 1.51°C and not 2°C. We need to keep fighting.

Every tonne of CO₂ emitted makes the job of future CO₂ removal harder, and every 0.01°C of temperature increase makes the world more chaotic and dangerous.
Earth set to exhaust ‘carbon budget’ within 3 years as Paris hopes fade
Goal of limiting warming to 1.5C looks increasingly out of reach, study finds
