Stunning illustration of mimicry! Common cuckoo eggs (top row) imitate the eggs of their host species (bottom row). The 30 October issue of Science explains this dazzling coevolution with genomic data — though I admit, it’s complex enough that I’d struggle to teach it! 🧪🌿🌎🦉

Studying Arctic foxes on Bylot Island (Nunavut, Canada), or being studied by them? The collared fox in this photo is a male named Ram, captured this summer. Great shot by my excellent MSc student Laurianne Dumont. 🧪🌿🌎🦊 #MovementEcology #wildlife

Camera traps in the polar desert: A polar bear grazing on vegetation beside one of our arthropod traps — a rare sight in our biodiversity monitoring study area at CFS Alert, Nunavut, Canada. Not sure why they do this, but it’s not unheard of. 🧪🌿🌎🦊🐻‍❄️ #wildlife

Animals don’t know they’ll soon be released when we trap them for tagging. I couldn’t help but wonder what went through the mind of this Arctic fox as I held her (Bylot Island, Nunavut, Canada, summer 2025).🧪🌿🌎🦊

Last year I set up four polar bear sampling stations in our study area at Alert (Nunavut, Canada). Goal: collect pictures and hairs to document the understudied Arctic Basin population. This one, from 8 August 2025, is our first good photo ! 🧪🌿🌎🌐🦑🦊 (barbed wire for genetic hair collection visible)

You don’t need to love birding to enjoy Northern Gannets gliding at sunset over a calm sea. Picture taken during a boat trip off Prince Edward Island, Canada on August 4th, 2025.🌿🌎🦉🦑

You know you love birding when… you double-check that this young Great Black-backed Gull has all 12 retrices (tail feathers) as expected. Picture taken during a boat trip off Prince Edward Island, Canada on August 4th, 2025.🌿🌎🦉🦑

You know you love birding when… you find the molting pattern in the primaries of this adult American Herring Gull both 'very interesting' and 'aesthetic.' Picture taken during a boat trip off Prince Edward Island, Canada on August 4th, 2025.🌿🌎🦉🦑

Took hundreds of pictures this summer on Bylot Island (Nunavut, Canada), but only now had time to go through them. This molting Arctic fox giving a cute nose-lick while staring at me in the tundra is one of my favorites. 🌿🦊

Short visit last week at the Churchill Wildlife Management Area (Manitoba, Canada). A bit early for polar bears 🐻‍❄️, but a few were already around! 🌿🦑🦊Learn more about the place: environmentalchange.hsieteachers.com/churchill---...

C’est important d’être dynamique quand on fait une conférence… mais sans dépasser les limites ! La semaine dernière, j'étais peut-être un peu trop excité en parlant de mes recherches sur les renards arctiques dans un colloque à Churchill au Manitoba. #UQAR. 😅

We publish in Ecology 30 years of Arctic wildlife monitoring on Bylot Island (Nunavut, Canada)! Our long-term dataset tracks 35 species across 400 km² of tundra, providing rare insights into community dynamics, food webs, and climate responses. Open data for all at bitly.cx/OnOI2 🌍🦊🦉🦑 🧪🌿🌐

Canids seem to be the routine lovers, reusing their travel routes more than felids. This shapes hunting, encounters, and even disease spread. Insights from 1,239 GPS-tracked carnivores, including the Arctic foxes we track on Bylot Island 🧪🌿🌎🌐🦊. Read in the latest PNAS at bitly.cx/TxI2

Drove 10 hours to Canadian Forces Base Trenton to catch a C-130 Hercules to Greenland & Ellesmere. Flight cancelled (plane needed for forest fire response in Canada). Drove 10 hours back home. Oh well, this is part of Arctic field work! Next year will be better. Picture: inside a Hercules (2024).

Just back from animal ecology field work on Bylot Island, Nunavut. Taking a moment to share this picture of me walking near one of our beautiful short-term camps (background=Baffin). Not all work was that glamorous; I’ll share more ‘usual’ moments later. Now heading to Alert, Ellesmere Island.🧪🌿🌎🦉🦊🐻‍❄️
