DOING THINGS ZINE SPOKANE
@doingthingszine.bsky.social
a free zine of local resources and general info made and handed out in Spokane, WA.
gift economy focused: beginner level theory: simple actions to take: submissions invited: free to all and for all to use and reprint in any form

hello Spokane and all #nokings and #indivisible and other protestors!
if we made a small edition that was explaining base concepts like:
mutual aid, gift economies, local organization, community work, de-escalation, definitions of rally vs protest-
would you all be able to use it? would you like it?
Trump in our back yard, people of Spokane. how do you like it?
The survey was designed by President Donald Trump’s former homelessness czar Robert Marbut. One of the most obvious issues with the study is a sample size so small it’s hard to make accurate conclusions about the findings.

🏳️‍⚧️ PASSPORT UPDATES 🏳️‍⚧️ We've been keeping an eye on how things play out following the recent development in Orr v. Trump... ACLU has recommended folks wait until at least 6/25 if possible before taking action re: passports, and check their FAQ (linked in our bio) for updates as they develop.

In national elections, liberals like me ask leftists to be coalition partners — hold their noses and vote for a candidate they don't love to beat someone truly terrible.

In New York, the shoe is on the other foot. And we should be clear that we're willing to do what we ask of our partners.

Now feels like a good time to remind people that we are an Audible alternative—every time you buy an audiobook with us, you support your indie.

Oh, & we're an employee-owned, Social Purpose Corporation—meaning we make decisions that benefit our mission, even if they go against our financial goals 🩷

If a state can cut of PP, then can cut off any provider. No reason to think that the way this country decaying that some state will decide that a Jewish hospital is "doing it wrong" and no longer eligible. Or to only fund Christian-based providers, not seculars.
A pandora's box of bullshit and evil.

anyone that tells you that your efforts to improve the world around you are not cool, is trying to stop you from acting.

they're trying to stop you. if you want the world to ever improve you've got to stop giving a shit what your opposition thinks of you and do your things anyway.

Ouch

"Maybe you worked with Food Not Bombs and made a clip-art anarchist zine back when you lived in a punk house, but a moderately popular Bluesky user has never heard any of those words before and is filing you under 'wine moms 4 Kamala.'"
The cringe-ification of protest
Social media is undermining the power of protest by framing it as "cringe," making the front line of change weaker.

The framing in this piece by @batallonbakunin.bsky.social is super helpful for thinking about anti-deportation struggles: taking concrete action to physically prevent the state machinery from carrying out its program, rather than just symbolically protesting against it.

I don't know what to say about the supreme court ruling

except that when I see trans girls get to have a girlhood, I'm besides myself with joy

and that I meet so many trans people who were made homeless as children by bigoted parents

and that trans kids deserve medical care and social acceptance

Don't worry about the broad movement strategy.

Find local orgs with deep roots in the community, who don't work with cops, and who have a good strategy for direct action to protect the vulnerable.

Tenants unions, mutual aid, ICE response, court watch, etc

Volunteer to help. Learn from the elders.

A massive peaceful march is nothing more than an opinion poll for politicians.

Politicians will do what they are paid to do. They will use those 50501 protest RSVP lists for fundraising.

Unless the movement is sustained through escalation, work stoppage, and direct action NOTHING will happen.

2025 marks 10 years since Puget Sound Prisoner Support began regularly hosting prisoner letter writing nights at Pipsqueak.

We are honoring the occasion by hosting an event to commemorate this milestone and to revitalize our commitment to prisoner support and total abolition of the carceral system.

Get money out of politics. We need true representative government. Big money having excessive influence over our government is the root of all problems. Money helps flood the public with propaganda and helps elect corrupt liars to office. Remove corruption @ let’s return to responsible governance.

Equally as important as the oft cited 3.5% of a population hitting the streets to create change number
is the need for a movement to have a specific demand.

Indian independence, civil rights, gov response to AIDs crisis were clear demands millions could push for.

What is the demand of this moment?
