Its October 1st. Crucial patient safeguards are not in place. GPCE has entered into formal dispute with the government. And rightly so ✊

GPs are really worried about the future.

It's a challenging time when we're not even sure of the government's commitment to general practice at its best: well resourced family doctors embedded in their local communities, serving patients who know them and trust them.

Undervaluing public sector workers is a false economy.

Quite apart from industrial action, or relocating to countries where they are better valued - it stops whole generations from taking these jobs seriously when considering which careers to start.

Whatever Labour's grand strategy is at the moment, it isn't working.

Just look at those Reform figures - they didn't like Labour before, and they dislike them even more now.

The government are wrong if they see yesterday's results as a further reason to shift right.

People are certainly disillusioned, and 2024 Labour voters are looking elsewhere - but mostly to the Greens or Lib Dems, not Reform.

The agreement from Wes Streeting regarding a completely new GP contract in more than 20 years is historic. This isn't just about money for the next 12 months, it will shape general practice for a generation.

Nye Bevan made many compromises in the run up to 1948. They were undeniably worth it.

🤐 99% of dentists in the South West are not accepting new NHS patients

🤯 Nearly 60% of adults and 47% of children in Dorset haven't seen a dentist in the last year

✊ Local Labour MPs @tomhayesmp.bsky.social, Jess Toale, Neil Duncan-Jordan and Lloyd Hatton are clear: NHS dentistry must change

The NHS is in undoubtably safer hands with Labour than the Tory chaos that preceded them or the privatised alt-right nightmare of Reform.

We must hold them to the promises, like today's, that got them into power.

Strong message here from @drkatie.bsky.social, pushing back against the idea that GPs are, in the Health Secretary's words, 'coasting'.

General Practice is under unprecedented pressure. It is vital that Wes Streeting backs the hard working doctors who keep the doors open and lights on.

"There may be an argument... for replacing the semi-autonomous NHS England - which has presided over the widespread collapse of services - with an operationally fully independent body... akin to the way in which the Monetary Policy Committee sets interest rates"

These are welcome signals from @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social - a contract that restores funding to core General Practice is vital. We need to #rebuildGP
December 20, 2024 at 4:41 PM
NHS General Practice is dangerously under-resourced.

To #rebuildGP we need:

📑 A plan to retain the GP workforce;

📈 Fair funding as part of the wider NHS;

🩺 Greater freedom and autonomy to do our jobs.

New letter from Wes Streeting to GP colleagues today:

"I have heard the concerns you have raised" about NICs, and "I am working rapidly to finalise the funding envelope for general practice".

Hard agree. It's an existential threat to primary care.

The Treasury needs to confirm this funding and move on. How can we restore the NHS from a position of GP bankruptcy?
