⚓ Yesterday, I finally met HMS Victory’s First Lieutenant in person after many emails. It felt surreal to come aboard and request the First Lieutenant on a first-rate ship of the line. We had a great chat about flags, hoists, and the ongoing work aboard Victory.

Amazing day today — and even managed to add a few autographs to my collection of naval literature! ⚓️📚

Also came away with a new direction to explore French naval signals! 🇫🇷📖

June 1796 on her first commission, Captain Miller was ordered to report with Surprise to Admiral Sir John Jervis, then commanding the blockade of Toulon from his flagship Victory.

Boat putting off from Surprise to head towards the flagship.

"HMS Victory - 100-gun ship"

She is shown here with officers coming aboard to possibly receive orders from the Admiral.

One can be seen in the ships board astern with another in the process of climbing the ships side.

There’s something magical about reading a historical book that is itself part of history. The scent of old paper, the feel of worn pages, it’s an experience like no other.
