From about 1986 to 1998, sociology majors increased faster than total completions. Rates of increase tracked the whole system from 1998-2006. Since then sociology growth lagged total growth. Growth is negative since 2014.

The absolute downturn is new. But sociology completions have declined as a share of all completions since about 2006.

Sociology completions have been declining in absolute terms since about 2013. Over most of this period, total bachelor’s completions grew. IPEDS data.
