Trumpism will cede global leadership to China in multiple areas because most other countries and institutions would prefer to deal with a lawful evil system than a chaotic evil one.

O PIB per capita português (em paridade de poder de compra) aumentou 3,1 pontos em 2023, na comparação com a média da UE. Ultrapassou a Polónia e a Estónia. E, para quem segue de perto esse tema, continua à frente da Roménia.

An unpleasant thing we're going to have to reckon with at some point is that a huge % of people who call themselves leftists aren't, they're just angry downwardly-mobile college grads who want themselves personally to stop being downwardly mobile

say it with me folks, modern conservatism has one principle: ingroups who the law protects but does not bind, and outgroups who the law binds but does not protect
I admit to being utterly bewildered by this new Trumpist conservatism that believes, on the one hand, that following the law is for suckers; while on the other hand believing that we need more policing and harsher penalties for violating the law. I don't understand how this coalesces into policy.

Korea Expert here. I’ll explain what’s going on over there because the Orient can be confusing to Westerners. In Korea, there is a concept known as “the law.” (법) This is a set of rules which are enforced to encourage prosocial behavior and ensure stability which leaders aren’t allowed to break.

Just to reiterate: Yoon's declaration of emergency martial law is absolutely shocking. Cannot state that strongly enough. Some on the left always said that was his end goal, but they were largely dismissed. No one thought it possible. We're now going to reach the Find Out portion of the program.

the Hunter Biden news implosion is a direct result of Trump’s scandalous behavior: the more awful stuff Trump does, the more the political media is aware of the seeming imbalance in their coverage, making them more desperate for “balancing” stories and more likely to jump on one that arrives

If you want a real insight into how weird and fucked up and varied US governance is “how much do legislators in each state make” is a good starting point
Gets even wackier at the state level. "Oh your legislature sits for nine days a year, and has a statutory salary of $12. They control $36bn in public spending."

Talvez haja reflexões relevantes a fazer nesse campo

Harris ran a great campaign with very few mistakes. The problem is that she was running against a wave of public anger created by the public’s channels of information all prioritizing outrage as much as possible: over immigration, over crime, over inflation
Yes it seems like a classic case of great depth of support but not great breadth. And even there, in the states where she most intensely campaigned, there was both high turnout and very close margins. I really don't think she made any obvious tactical mistakes!

A ordem internacional do pós-1945 não foi concebida por idealistas utópicos. Foi construída por líderes políticos experientes que durante a sua vida viram a destruição humana da 1º e 2ºGM.
If Trump makes good on his promise to end the war, supporters of Ukraine must be clear about the principles at stake and be careful not to let maximalist aims foreclose a durable negotiated settlement, Matthew Duss and Robert Farley argue.

This is a very good point. Multiparty systems allow voters and politicians to defect to new parties, and this constrains bad actors who gain control of parties
There’s that, but also (perhaps counterintuitively) the weak party system. Unlike in the US, Bolsonaro could never threaten people in his coalition with political doom: there is no “primarying” a politician from your party, they can just go and run (and win) in another party.
