Reader, novelist, poet, editor, citizen. www.dmgordon.com Dogged by dogs. The ancient goldfish aswim in my kitchen says O, O, O when it sees me, god of clean water, sprinkling dried insects from heaven. Holding tight to #wonder & #kindness.
Further research on biscuits for my friend's West Texas Novel Launch, the whole audience treated to a cowgirl breakfast—coffee, peach jam and biscuits. These, "Butter Swim Biscuits." It's mad science, ridiculously decadent, easy, and yummy. Science! cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1025...

A #poem today.

Addressed to a friend who, diagnosed with #cancer and still healthy enough, stopped living. Thinking how Catholic School taught us to live with death every day. One of those life lessons one needs to learn over and over.

From Nightly at the Institute of the Possible. #poetry

Sometimes I should remember to look straight up. What was over my head.

Went looking for happy this morning on Bluesky, needing it, but this hour, found a tsunami of hate, anger and frustration as deep as I scroll, emotions running high...and how not?

Sending something to pause upon. A burst of late color.

"“They were careless people,” F.Scott Fitzgerald wrote of the Gatsby set, “they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

Why "Jack-o-lanterns"? One possibility, an Irish folk tale about Jack who tricked the Devil, cursed to wander earth, forever denied heaven or hell, given a burning ember from hell to light his way, which he placed inside a carved-out turnip. He became known as "Jack of the Lantern."

Didn't plan it, but tonight, deep into winter dark, unseen creatures screeching and scritching in the woods, coyotes howling, far from costumed children seeking candy, I'll finish Dracula, spectacularly inventive in 1897, so much we now take for granted. It's been a trip.

Poised on the brink of November. There's a message here, but I'm not sure what it is.

The colors have been muted this year but still beautiful. The oaks, the last to turn, are in the foreground and I just missed the sun popping the little red dogwood. (Light is everything.) Then comes the yellow tulip tree and dark copper beech in the center. The blue, blue sky.

Lots of tiny poppyseed ticks around right now... somehow.
Don't forget your Insect Shield clothes while in the leaves.
You don't want #LymeDisease or coinfections, folks. They're nasty.

Brio and Luna have tick jackets. Any little bit helps.

The very last of the summer's tomatoes, brought in after the last frost and ripened on the vine. Oh, soooo sweet.

Re-reading Dracula, the elegant Victorian prose, the sexuality, the antiquated attitudes and originality of the initial creation. A movie has never captured it for all the times they've tried, not really. Cool cover.

Words you might need today from Neruda. Read the whole #poem in ALT. This, taped to the wall of my doctor's bathroom.

"Now we will count to twelve
and we will all keep still
for once on the face of the earth,
let’s not speak in any language....."
