I appealed up the chain of command, taking it as far as the Minister's office. At one point a Manager for the Department of Historical Designations told me that it's off limits for safety reasons given that the site is dangerous and "frequented by bears." Hence the commemorative t-shirt.

I asked the Alberta Government for permission to access Bitumount (for an art project). At first my inquiry was received in a positive light but then the communication stopped. After waiting a couple of weeks and following up there was an about face, I was summarily denied.

The grizzlies do seem to be a bit much, but this is what I’ve been told by the Alberta government- “frequented by bears” was the exact phrase, to be fair. That’s great that you’ve actually been there! Thanks for the comment Beth!
