On the beach, if you see a "beard" on the little bean clams hoping around the surf, that is *not* a byssus from the clam, but in fact hydroids hitching a ride on the clam! Research suggests that clams bearing hydroids are less likely to be predated by moon snails, so it is a true mutualism! (198)
