PMRC memories. As a rebellious kid, I remember this label was like a badge of honor 😁
Via @boomtownpodcast.bsky.social: 40yrs ago today (1985), Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) agreed to start adding Parental Warning labels to albums. The now standard B&W sticker was intro’d in 1990.

This year for Halloween, I dressed as the character Shirley from the late 1970s sitcom ‘What’s Happening.’ Team Shirley all day!

Tonight I went to see ‘Move Ya Body: The Birth of House.’ What I was NOT expecting to see in it was an interview with Captain Sky. That + the filmmaking, factual accuracy, & truth telling are why I so love this documentary. Plus the film fully contextualizes disco culture—a wish come true. 🙌🏾🪩

Congrats to Danny Bedrosian on his 2nd book, ‘Make My Funk the P-Funk: Parliament-Funkadelic’s Meteoric Rise in 1975 from Chocolate City to Mothership Connection.’

It’s a perfect companion to his 2023 book, ‘The Authorized P-Funk Song Reference: Official Canon of Parliament-Funkadelic, 1956-2023.

My mom took this photo at a Run DMC autograph signing at the Adidas Store in the old Plaza mall in New Orleans East, circa 1988. God bless my mom. She snapped this, thinking she captured the group, not realizing she mostly got their security. She did at least get a small glimpse of Jam Master Jay. 🤗

What’s my favorite collection at Tulane University Special Collections, where I work? I never have a fave b/c I discover something new every day - like this! It’s a circa 1976 WNNR AM New Orleans radio newsletter I discovered in the newly opened Tad Jones papers: library.tulane.edu/news/now-ope...

On view at Tulane University, and it was a joy to work on this. But you don’t have to visit campus to see it. Check out the digitized collection of Black New Orleans nightlife posters, 1979-1980, newly published online via the Tulane University Digital Library: libguides.tulane.edu/BlackNightli...

This past Fri, the legendary, nearly 80 year-old Zigaboo Modeliste (The Meters) played a rare show at Tipitina’s.

An experience like this is why I maintain that New Orleans is the capital of Funk. For us, funk isn’t a moment that happened in the 1970s & then went away. We experience it every day.

See you at Tipitina’s tonight! Tickets available at the door if you can’t get them online. Funk attack! Tonight will be another right on party situation AND total experience! 💥🖤🎂
