Japan is moving closer than ever to legalizing the primary use of birth names after marriage, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s bill on the matter likely to be submitted to parliament soon.
Japan one step closer to relaxing single-surname rule for married couples
While still having married couples adopt the same surname, the ruling coalition is working on a bill that would allow the option of giving more weight to birth names.
