In retrospect it’s kind of a hilarious own of utilitarianism that we actually did make a “marketplace of ideas” and it mostly just filled people’s heads with nonsense and drove them insane.

~10 years ago there was a sense where you could just… put things on the internet? Like pinning something on a bulletin board that everyone walked by.
You can’t do that now. You have to be hustling, trying to “make it” as a “content creator.” Or you’re a passive consumer flipping channels.

Actually that’s not quite accurate. It’s more like watching half of my clients being convinced by hateful demagogues, who are also covertly taking material steps to kill them off as well, that the problem will be fixed if they dehumanize and imprison the other half. Stanford Prison Experiment shit

A subtle but persistent problem I've experienced a lot (and one that is made very transparent by starting fresh on a new social media platform) is that I'll start belonging to some online subculture and then they turn shitty and hateful. Over and over. Many such cases.
