It surprised me that there weren’t any free apps for just putting on some nature sounds to fall asleep to. So I bought a professional recorder 2nd-hand and made my own app. Now it’s a hobby and a good excuse to visit wild areas. #sound #soundscapes #chill

Using llama3.2-vision 13B for robot vision: it seems much worse at object recognition than YOLO under real-life conditions with an $8 camera. It’s definitely not a drop-in replacement. I’ll try writing some functional tests, try a better-quality camera and tune my prompts. #llm #robotics #ai #llama

My TL;DR for the @deepseek.bsky.social R1 paper+code: take a standard LLM foundational model (V3). Train it further with Reinforcement Learning (reward for right answers on a set of question/answer prompts) and teach it to “think aloud” between tokens. Then finetune into a chatbot. #llm #ai

Copilot gpt-4o seems to write average or below code with mistakes, presumably because that’s what it was trained on. I have a feeling that enthusiasm for LLM coding is negatively correlated with coding ability. For now I will just use it for boilerplate and test generation. #copilot #llm #ai

I wrote a blog post about how to migrate a live service from Heroku to Railway PaaS. But it should be relevant to anyone who is thinking about changing the tyres on their software service bus, whilst it's driving full-speed down the highway.

The only 3 reasons I like cryptocurrency:
- the theory interests me as a programmer
- institutions and banks now have competition and must provide a minimum level of service to stop people switching
- incentive for more global cooperation, to stop the same scams which are illegal at a national level

Don’t rule out big old hard drives for cold data storage; this cost 1/3 of a small 2.5in portable drive. It needs a 3e adapter and a beefy 12v @2A supply. I’m fine with bodging it to my lab supply with alligator cables for my bi-yearly backup backup. #lifehacks #it #backup #hardware #computing
