My mouse was feeling ropey so I bought that £20 Logitech you recommended, all good so far

A relative of mine lives in an inexpensive, out of the way northern town, and the level of rent up to which they'll cover won't even get you a room in a shared house. So they're stuck renting somewhere they can't really afford

Man I'm so bad at this. I see a potential new hobby or skill and I'm like "Could I be one of the best in the world at this, preferably within a few weeks? No? Oh well, never mind then" 😭

I think Rick Beato is good at that sort of thing, his analysis of Emergence by Sleep Token is full of fascinating little details

This is basically correct, though at my company there's only the long distance stuff so no requirement to work through lower speed units. It takes about 15-18 months from starting the course to driving by yourself

Well on the type of train I drive (and those LNER units), the relevant vestibule camera would display on the monitor in the cab if an alarm was pressed, so that should help you figure out what was going on. If there was nobody there, you could ask the crew to investigate and then decide what to do
November 2, 2025 at 2:59 PM
You don't need to work in the industry long to see why people often call it the 'railway family'. Drivers, signallers, cleaners, platform staff, train crew, track workers, scheduling teams... Everyone works together to try and do a decent job in often tough circumstances
November 2, 2025 at 11:36 AM
Yes we're trained to override the brake that comes with the alarm in most cases, while we talk with whoever pulled it and find out what's going on (while still safely driving the train). We never override it if the alarm goes while leaving a platform, in case someone is stuck in the doors

As drivers our first point of contact is the signaller, who can then alert the emergency services as necessary. In this incident the driver would've also had to request a route onto the slow line to access the platform at Huntingdon. As you said it all seems to have been coordinated very well

Fantastic article isn't it. I'd not come across him until I started reading a collection of travel writing by Norman Lewis (also fantastic). Seems they worked together closely for quite a while

Watched a bit of your first Valkyria Chronicles 4 stream on YouTube the other day to see if I wanted to buy it. Really liked your approach and I've now bought the game on Switch 2 for the bargain price of £8.99 for the complete edition. I won't be any good at it but looks fun regardless 😄

At this stage in its downfall, I fear the Xwitter people would replace 'Vietnamese chap' with some racial slur

I so envy you napping people. Never mind a 20 minute nap, it takes me about 40 minutes just to fall asleep. I'd then wake up an hour later feeling heavily jetlagged
