My theory of this is a lot of white middle-aged, middle-class people, who see themselves as having good (centre-ish) values and being where they are on merit, see Starmer in the same light and are very invested in it not turning out he’s been overpromoted precisely because he’s in their demographic.

Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

nothing short of appalling! Tories, Starmer et al. should hang their heads in shame! They obviously only care about power at anyone else's expense. You're absolutely correct. Only the Greens seem to have the backbone to speak the truth. They have my full support!!

Well said. I'm glad you're staying, despite all the people trying to turn Britain into a meaner, smaller place.

When my wife got her UK citizenship a couple of years ago, the ceremony filled me with hope, about the country this is and can be. It's up to us to make it so.

Personal note: London has been home for a very, very long time, but as of today, I am also officially a Brit - that is to say, a British citizen. I feel relieved and I feel grateful - but not, perhaps, in the forelock-tugging way GB News/Starmer expect a new immigrant to be.

yes. being a leftwing ex-Orthodox Jew, I maybe straddle a wider range of views among my friends and family than some (than many?)

it may be shocking to learn that: every bias I have ever seen the BBC accused of, I have also heard someone else say they have the precise opposite one
In response to some of the comments:

If you agree with *all* the reporting of a news organisation that is both independent *and* non-partisan, then it's very unlikely to be independent and non-partisan.

This is true regardless of your politics.

Agreeing with all its reporting is the wrong test
Information underpins democracy and the BBC is a key part of that.

We need to protect our institutions

Yes they are coming for us particularly because we are Anglophone, and for the BBC particularly because it is a trusted Anglophone voice that people in the US can potentially look at
Be clear, the American far right are coming for British democracy.

Pointing out hypocrisy is a waste of time and reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of what’s happening and what’s at stake. Fascism is not concerned with logical consistency or argument.

My article on the 20 point gaza "peace plan" is now out. Let me tell you why peace processes in the Israeli Palestinian conflict seem to keep failing, with a focus on Tony Blair the menace of the middle east

Gaza peace plan risks borrowing more from Tony Blair’s failures in the Middle East than his success in Northern Ireland
The former British leader was tapped to lead redevelopment efforts in Gaza if a deal is agreed upon.

Can I also say I am so angry today. It's the lives lost, the cities wiped out, the time taken from us. We have been consumed with this level of unspeakable violence for 2 years. To think of all the potential futures taken away... it's unfathomable

1. This is as close as we have been to an end to the war, ever since October 7.
2. Close doesn't mean we'll get there.
3. Netanyahu is cornered and may well lash out in a completely apocalyptic way, including on Iran. Praying he'll be stopped.

Two takes we can really do without:
1. Blaming the attack on pro-Palestine marches.
2. Highlighting pro-Israel positions expressed by/at the synagogue to justify the attack.
Irresponsible, dangerous and vile.
