All of this makes community donations more important than ever. Even small contributions can help soften the gap while organizations work to recover.

Food banks are facing the same strain. As reported by NPR, some missed government food deliveries entirely during the shutdown and expect to be short on stock for months as they try to catch up.

Households that relied on SNAP or missed paychecks spent down reserves they had just trying to get by. Now, even with benefits and paychecks restarting, it’ll take time for many to rebuild stability to stop relying on emergency support.

Want to add even more plant-based protein to your day?

Here are some snacks to consider:

• Air-popped popcorn w/ nutritional yeast (trust me)
• Dried edamame/chickpeas
• Whole-grain crackers with hummus or bean dip
• Walnuts & unsweetened dried cranberries

What are your go-to plant-based snacks?

Thank you, Carla! I heard Dr. Batiste talk about his book “Selfish” on The Exam Room podcast last year and made a mental note to read it.

I appreciate you putting that back on my radar ☺️

“How Not to Age” is definitely on my reading list for this year!

I’ve also heard good things about “Becoming Vegan.” 🙂

I had my eyes on the sesame ginger one in particular—so I’m glad to hear it may be worth a try! 🙂

Forks Over Knives was one of the first documentaries that got me thinking about going vegan. Despite being released in 2011, it’s still such a powerful watch.

If you’re interested in a plant-based dietitian’s perspective on the film, here’s my full take:
