Interesting plot of left and right votes in Spain’s general election by census track income: left dominates up to 7 percentile, tied until 40, left up to 89 (Sumar’s strong urban vote), then right at the top. @raulsanchezglez & @VictriaVic in @elDiarioes...

Along the way, this confirms the equivalent of Alonso-Muth condition in monocentric model holds: distance to city centre elasticity of travel (from household-level travel data with tract info from NHTS) = distance to centre elasticity of rents (tract-level rents from ACS) = 0.07

Our modelling of planning regulations implies novel empirical predictions confirmed by US data: 1) Larger & more productive cities tend to impose more restrictive planning regulations and this implies more expensive housing not just at the city centre, but also at the periphery

Today, we held SUCRE (the Spatial & Urban Coffee REndezvous) at the namesake coffee place (@SucreSalonDeTe) across the street from @CEMFINews, to discuss research on cities and space without the formality that classrooms often impose. (1/2)

Back to racing at @MadridCorre! @PhillyRun pace team singlet is a nod to the last time wearing a bib, ages ago. Too bad running the @bostonmarathon (and visiting Wharton Real State) this fall appears increasingly unlikely with US restrictions on travel from the EU still in place

Inspired by all the #aea5k tweets, I finished my run today with 5k in 18:26. Thanks to @causalinf for the great initiative. Coldest day I remember on the Miño riverside, but enjoyable nevertheless. Running is always fun, cold or warm, fast or slow.

We had a very nice @CEMFINews Christmas party today in a virtual version of our indoor patio hosted by @gather_town. While we missed being face-to-face (& the jamón!), it was great getting together with all the faculty, students and staff

Neat: musicians find Beethoven's metronome marks too quick. @puratura & @Enchufa2 extract tempo from recordings: Beethoven is played about 12bpm slower than marked. Weight of his metronome marked tempo above, bottom is 12bpm higher, conclude he misread it...

Possibly the biggest mistake in tackling the pandemic is to think there is a trade-off between containing the spread of the virus and re-starting the economy. Rushing to what Spain officially called “new normality” is not just ineffective, but counterproductive. Plot from the @FT

Claims that the current high incidence of COVID-19 in Spain is due to social norms, cultural traits, family structure or sectoral composition are hard to sustain when we compare the data with that for Portugal and Italy, where all those factors are similar.
