After stencil & color application I etch the dots, then add my other signature markings. Post bisque I wax areas that I want unglazed, stain, and then finally, glaze the piece. For some, this process may seem lengthy but for me each step is a making journey from which the soul of the work is born.🦋

I make all the newsprint transfers that I use to add blocks of color. This work is done ahead of time so when I sit down to decorate, I have everything ready to go. This process allows me the freedom to inquisitively approach the decoration phase of my process with immediacy.

My approach to surface design of happens with a sort of controlled spontaneity. I spend a lot of upfront time drawing personally meaningful images, that then get turned into stencils, which I hand cut one by one. After years of creating stencils I’ve amassed a large image library to work with.
