The best novella about weird sex parties I’ve read all year.

Phew.

Did I understand all of it? Absolutely not.

Did it nonetheless change the structure of my thinking? I think so.

Having read books about it, previously, it was still remarkable to see the dialectic play out across examples. Especially about culture and individuality.

Didn’t learn a lot in terms of broad brush strokes, but only because its central ideas have become part of the analytical fabric.

The particular examples of writing by imperial “experts” were, at times, so on-the-nose as to seem like absurdist satire.

“The shortness of life, so often lamented, may be the best thing about it.”

2024 / book 6.

A compelling and sometimes visceral collection of poems. The closing series is especially memorable for its depiction of grief.

2024 / book 5.

A quiet little novel with a poignant third act. Delicate.

Big shout out to capitalism. Don’t know what we’d do without you.

Oooh, was it Branson?

It’s really cool how capitalism avows the use of passive language to obfuscate real choices and imply that layoffs are mystical phenomena.

A straightforward essay critiquing the orthodox view that work is in-itself a moral good.

“We torched our own reputation by choosing profits over safety.

Quick! Leak that some components are FOREIGN and therefore SUSPICIOUS.

…..wink.”

2024 / book 2.

A hallucinatory and damp novella in which little happens except for sexual awakening and a progressive bodily decomposition.

Enjoyably bizarre. Less piss than expected.

First read of the year. An easy 5* to yet another Todd McGowan book.

A breathtaking Hegelian reversal of how those on the left should view identity as a dead-end for emancipatory politics.

Instead, we must recognise the only true universal; that of a shared lack, and universal nonbelonging.
