#westmeath features quite prominently in the history of telecommunications in Ireland, partly due to the radio transmitter at Moydrum. Its power caused problems at the start of WW2:
An extract from Connecting a Nation: The problem for the British was that the powerful 10o kW transmitter at Athlone could also be used by the Luftwaffe to guide air raids on the UK. Pressure from the British government to synchronise Athlone with the other Radio Éireann transmitters in Dublin and Cork was initially ineffective as the Irish authorities lacked the equipment required to make the changes. To reduce the utility of the Athlone transmitter for German bombers, in September 1939 the BBC took three low-powered transmitters at Redmoss outside Aberdeen, Penmon on Anglesey and Clevedon near Bristol out of regular service. In a measure to confuse Luftwaffe aircraft, receivers picked up Radio Éireann and relayed it by landline for retransmission at the three BBC sites.38 In October 1940, the Irish authorities acquired the equipment required to synchronise the three Radio Eireann transmitters at Dublin, Cork and Athlone thus reducing their value as navigation aids, and the BBC relays ceased. There is no record of whether British listeners missed their regular dose of hurling and céilí music after the retransmissions ended.

My grandmother, who ran a pub in Co Cavan, used to regularly mention the introduction of Time. I assume her memory of it was strong because it brought something new to what must have been an otherwise limited range of beers in the early 60s.

It’s the same data feed as used by the TFI app to produce the Live Departure info. But a map view of the buses is very useful sometimes.

I think there is money to be made renting out small dogs for a few hours to single straight men. Our small terrier of indeterminate heritage attracts quite a few fans, typically younger women.
