They/them
It's not what I expected from the album (I don't think I've ever felt so moved by stories of disability written by people who don't openly self-identify as disabled), but it's what I needed. I'm glad to have it. I hope that people take the time to really hear it.

As a trans crippled poet, in a country that's going through the thorny process of legalising MAiD at the same time as waging a relentless war against financial support for disabled people and the healthcare that keeps us alive, media that asserts the value of our strange, short lives is essential.

In Your Glow (which on first listen made me weep), as Peter finally dies, the narrator makes it clear that they never stopped seeing him as Peter Balkan, the man they've always known.

The album lavishly depicts his last 45(ish) days, and messy as they are, they are overwhelmingly full of meaning, love, and and weird, vibrant, disabled life.
There's no sense that the narrator sees caring for Peter as anything other than the obvious thing to do.

Peter Balkan becomes disabled at the outset of the album. The narrator knows he's dying. And he's so clearly loved. He's cared for tenderly. Limited resources are used to keep him alive as long as possible. His time is valuable.

I use krita & typically I'm really bad at picking up new software (to the extent that, prior to Krita, I used MyPaint & refused to download any updates for literally ten years). I found it pretty intuitive and I'm very comfortable using it now ☺️

I’m not here to generate shareholder value. I am a sensing and thinking organ of the universe and I will speak the universe’s truth until it is time for me to be something else. A boil of burrowing insects. An apple tree. A raincloud. An altered word in the mouth of whoever comes next.

I'm reminded of these paintings by Jessica Taylor-Bearman, who started making them while bedridden in a semi-coma and unable to hold a brush

I feel like there's a big difference between "learn to draw" and "find joy in the self-expression of art regardless of your skill and understand that anything you make, however you make it, has inherent value" and people often say the former when they mean the latter.

I do know that my managers Naomi and Rebecca have done everything in their power to take care of the team and give us as much security as possible in an extremely unstable industry, and I'm really thankful for that.

I think shaving your head is something everyone should do at least once. It's so liberating!!

My suggestion is trams! I love them and I think they should be everywhere. More reliable and accessible than buses, and safer in heavily pedestrianised areas.

Using a manual wheelchair is tiring, especially with difficult terrain like hills or uneven pavements. When I used one, I was just as dependent on buses as when I was still walking, if not more so.

Access to mobility aids is really not a given in the UK, even for people with very severe mobility impairments; eligibility for wheelchair services is incredibly stringent.
But it's also important to know that wheelchair users are often limited in how long they can move for.

Unfortunately the tube is really inaccessible. The only way for me to get anywhere in London is by bus, and pedestrianisation usually excludes buses.
February 2, 2025 at 3:33 PM
The main mobility issue with spaces like this is the exclusion of buses, which is especially significant in London because there's an expectation that everyone will use the tube, and the tube is almost entirely inaccessible.
