(Specifically, MY ketubah). The upper left writing, rather than one of the commentaries of a Talmud page, has a calligraphy of the words of Emma Lazarus’s poem the new colossus.

It’s not just that prison meals are bland and unappetizing — though they often are.

In lawsuits and news reports, kitchen workers at prisons in Arizona, Oregon, and elsewhere reported seeing boxes of food that were served to prisoners marked: “not for human consumption.”
Prison Food Is a Growing Billion-Dollar Industry. Many Meals Are Inedible.
As private food providers' contracts grow, the meager and moldy portions behind bars have forced some people to eat toothpaste and toilet paper.

This is my yearly reminder that

A) The Pilgrims never turned on the Wampanoags. The Puritans who did were a whole different group of people.

B) Thanksgiving became a holiday to celebrate whooping the Confederates.

Sometimes we can just enjoy traditions without guilt!

Thanksgiving is problematic. Giving thanks is not. As someone who wants to remember the attempted genocide of indigenous people but also likes a reminder to practice gratitude, I like to use Indigenous People's Month to support (and be grateful for) indigenous creators. A partial list! /1

One way you can tell that so much of the crying over the Afghanistan withdrawal was not heartfelt concern for Afghans is that it was rarely accompanied by calls for increased refugee-admissions, & in fact it coincided with a turn against immigration in public sentiment
