we have this zany idea that you should use quotation marks to indicate which parts of the text are being quoted from another source, and not put stuff that's a part of your writing and not being quoted in there, because that is confusing

does the question mark go inside if the quote wasn’t itself a question? if so, that’s pretty badly misleading. if not, why does the period behave differently?

there are a gazillion reasons why the punctuation should go outside the quotations marks and exactly one reason to put it inside and it’s “it looks nicer to me”

I just think it’s a mistake to try to read anything into this about what the Dems were trying to do. there isn’t anything the Dems were trying to do, the Dems don’t actually exist
