Indeed! This likely reflects inter-species differences in neurodevelopmental complexity, and hence the need for microglia to assist it.

It's interesting though that humans born w/o microglia (due to mutations in the CSFR gene) have a completely aberrant brain development and don't survive long after birth...

Beautiful work! Were animals hosted in a light:dark cycle? We recently showed that many DAM and plaque-associated microglia genes change between the light and dark phase. I wonder what we would see if we extended this kind of transcriptional profiling of microglia to both phases. shorturl.at/icWJD
