The summary reads: “Sage,” the stranger said as he leaned back, eyes wide and dilated. “And blood.” “Copper.” Neil felt heady and off-balance. No one had smelled him since his mother died. She only said he smelled of blood when she was angry, her eyes distant and haunted as the shadow of a monster hung heavy over them both. His father was the one who smelled of blood, but it wasn’t from his neck and wrists. Blood pooled in his mouth instead; slipped out between his teeth, dried scablike under his fingernails. It was his legacy that Neil inherited, but he’d done it all wrong. He was supposed to be an Alpha. His hands were supposed to be steady when they held a knife. He was supposed to be able to stand still, to hold his tongue, to obey. He wasn’t born an Alpha, so the least he could do was be a good Omega. He wasn’t sure such a thing existed. More than that, he was sure he wasn’t an Omega at all.
