This morning, a M6 earthquake struck at ~70 km depth near Anchorage, Alaska.

Earthquakes are a regular part of life here: this is a subduction zone, with earthquakes deepening east to west. M6 earthquakes fall well within the range of "normal".

It has been a busy couple of days! There was a large landslide and tsunami in SE Alaska, in Tracy Arm, Sunday morning. Luckily, no injuries or casualties were reported. This region is outside of our current landslide coverage, but we were able to get a quick location after hearing about the event. 🧵

‘Only’ early August and ice is exposed over much of the glacier => low albedo 🥵
And guess what?
Another heatwave is on the way over SW France with 40°C forecasted => very heavy melting in the coming days! 🔥 🧊 💧

Great article with comments by @diegosismologo.bsky.social, @acarrerac.bsky.social, @seismo-steve.bsky.social and @judithgeology.bsky.social. Though the tsunamis weren't as massive as past events, people evacuated because of timely warnings and accurate forecasting of when/where waves would arrive.

In the Mont Blanc Massif (Grandes Jorasses), an *open-access* paper shows an increased seismicity in the recent years, mostly triggered by meltwater.

The "cryosphere retreat driven by climate change can increase alpine seismic hazards".
