So why are you dismantling key pillars of GDPR to allow foreign big tech companies to train their “AI” models on Europeans' private data without needing a permission?

The only regulation that holds back European innovation are the overreaching IP laws that prevent interoperability and repairability and that were imposed on us trough lobbying in the UN. If the Commission really wanted to remove burdens for European innovation, they’d repeal directive 2001/29/EC.

I tried several times to start using masto and it only clicked for me like a year ago. The barrier to entry is def ridiculously high but I like to use it alongside other platforms as it gives me peace of mind that if BS or other stuff goes to hell, I have a place to retreat to without much hassle.

If there is one AP/Router from the ISP and all devices in the house connect to it via WiFi, it’s pretty straightforward to just kick the devices off the network temporarily.

That’s the thing. It was naturally difficult to spread fringe thought in regular social dynamics. People would ignore you and the crazier the opinion, the harder it was to find audience for it. Today algorithm will broadcast whatever nonsense to mind-bogglingly large audience.

So when people say Masto or Lemmy failed and that Pixelfed is going to fail, I think they misunderstand that success isn’t defined as becoming the next default thing. If the current turmoil around Meta or TikTok leads to some fragmentation, that’s ok. Go and join weird little thing!
