There’s been a lot of talk and discussion about the Black Church and Black churches lately. As someone who earned a certificate in Black Church Studies, I figured I’d share a snapshot of some of the books in the “Black Church and related topics” section of my bookshelf.

This Sunday, I went to homecoming with my grandma at her family church. It has inspired me to write something about homecoming at Black churches in more rural areas in the South. I’m interested in the rituals and the music in a place that’s untouched by CCM as well as the connection to family.

Today is my 28th birthday! It’s a weird birthday in the liminal space between 25 and 30, when I’ll start my “real” adult life. (I’ll finally be done with school & prayerfully starting my career, among other things).

The church my little sister attends is doing a sermon series on children’s books. She sent me this as a birthday gift because she said it might be interesting to me.

Yesterday I competed in my first pole dance competition. My goal was to not come in last, and I came in 6th out of 7 in my category. I am proud of my efforts and grateful for the support of my family and community!

And just like that, I am official a PhD candidate/ABD (All But Dissertation)!
*sings “I am freeeee, praise the Lord, I’m free!”

I look forward to continuing my research on Black women dancers, pole and liturgical/praise and worship, and the sacred!

A coat of armer I made for a class assignment in 2004 when I was 7. Peep the “I dance for church” at the top. My whole life has been preparing me for my PhD project lol
