Defund CPD to Defund CPL is quite the story arc.

I’m old enough to remember “I won’t cut the CPD Budget by one cent” once MBJ made the runoff.

Defunding Libraries under Fascism is **not** fighting against Trump. But hey #lipservice has its benefits.

#ProgressiveBudget though, am I right?

My latest reprinted in @truthout.org. "Libraries represent the kind of infrastructure progressive leaders should fortify and defend at all costs, especially in this moment. Instead, libraries in Chicago are being hollowed out, while the police budget remains sacrosanct."

Meanwhile Mayor Johnson’s budget - you know, the “progressive one” that “taxes the rich” to give to CPD inflates that budget to over HALF of our total corporate fund. And continues to borrow to pay off misconduct settlements.

Chicagoans are paying about $40 apiece just for lawsuits tied to disgraced former cop Reynaldo Guevara Jr.

So far this year, the city is on the hook for some $285M in police misconduct settlements—roughly $100 per resident
really good comparison here. can someone calculate what Chicago residents are paying for CPD settlements?
Kansas City residents are paying out the equivalent of $50 each for Kansas City Police settlements just for comparisons.

And to be clear, the mayor's 2026 proposal is not just a "no police cuts" budget -- it's a budget in which CPD (already the city's most expensive dept. by far) received a larger year-over-year net increase of non-grant funds than any other dept.

Larger than most other departments' entire budgets!

From my anecdotal experience, this is absolutely true
Police have access to massive surveillance networks that track the public whether they are suspects or not. That means probably for every 1 officer caught using the system to harass or spy on people they have feuds with, ex's, activists, journalists, there are probably 100 more we don't know about.

At a time when we are drowning in police misconduct settlements that are costing the city millions and forcing the city to take out massive loans with HIGH interest rates… this seems like such a slap in the face. This is not accountability and this is not responsible governance.
