St. George's Opera-House Two operatic pieces by Offenbach, the most popular, if not the greatest, composer of these latter days, with an operetta in proper form, by Mr. Arthur Sullivan, in the middle, made up an attractive bill for the opening night at this concert-room, converted into an opera house. "Puss in Petticoats," with which the performances commenced, is an Offenbachian version of Scribe's ingenious little vaudeville, "La Chatte metamorphosie en Femme." A student whose head had been turned by reading certain German works which M. Scribe himself had evidently not perused, falls in love with his cat--of course an Angora--and prays that she may be metamorphosed into a young girl. A Hindoo magician opportuntely presents himself, and gives the student a talisman which enables him to effect the desired change. The young girl--like the cat-girl of the ancient fable--shows unmistakable traces of her feline origin. She loves to sup milk, has a passion for playing with balls of worsted, and is unable to restrain her ardour for the chase when mice are within reach. She has nails, too, beneath the velvet of her paws; and she so scratches, teases, and torments her lover that he at last seeks for his talisman that he may reconvert the young lady into a cat. Then it appears that--strange to relate!--the cat cat has remained a cat throughout, while the young lady has always been ayoung lady, though, for her own good purposes, she may not invariably have behaved as such. She has adopted the graces, gestures, and general manners and customs of an Angora cat in order to cure her cousin (the student whom much German hath made mad) of his inordinate admiration for cats, and especially for his own particular cat, the fascinating "MInette."

[371] Farnsworth Wright to August Derleth, 13 July 1931, WHS THE HORROR FROM THE LAKE is obviously inspired by Long’s story, THE HORROR FROM THE HILLS, and some of the early scenes in your story parallel Long’s. This in itself would be sufficient objection to bar the 10 story from Weird Tales. Also, your story does not have the distinction of style which is one of the charms of Long’s story.2 But a more serious objection to this story is the fact that you have lifted whole phrases from Lovecraft’s works, as for instance: “the frightful Necronomicon of the mad Arab Abdul Alhazred,” “the sunken kingdom of R’lyeh,” 15 “the accursed spawn of Cthulhu,” “the frozen and shunned Plateau of Leng,” etc. Also you have taken the legends of Cthulhu and the Ancient Ones directly out of Lovecraft. This is unfair to Lovecraft. Robert Louis Stevenson once said that in the days of his apprenticeship to the writing craft he “had played the sedulous ape” to different authors in turn. But you have not merely aped 20 Lovecraft in this story—you have even lifted his wording. My admiration for Lovecraft’s writing amounts almost to idolatry, and I cannot allow such imitation in Weird Tales. It is all right to use the legends as Howard and Smith have used them—a mere allusion to them; but your usage oversteps the bounds of propriety.

Small thread. While I fully understand and appreciate the desire to acknowledge Lovecraft's racism and emphasize that Lovecraft was not the sole font of cosmic horror and but part of a tradition in weird literature...

...you have to understand a lot of his precursors & peers were also very racist.
