To freeze your credit, you need accounts with each of the three major agencies (Experian, Equifax, Transunion). Once logged in, it’s an easy couple of clicks to freeze. When you want to apply for credit, you can temporarily that or permanently unfreeze your reports just as easily.

When you freeze your credit, creditors can’t access your credit information. This means they can’t approve new accounts including credit cards, loans, or other consumer credit. A frozen report will help protect you from fraud and identity theft - a major concern now that our data has been breached.

We don’t know how secure the data is now and it is best to consider it permanently compromised.

Do not give new account data to the government for your tax returns. Either use the account they already have on file or request paper checks.

It will be a smart precaution to move money out of accounts to which you’d previously given the federal government access.

Once logged in, it is easy to freeze your credit report from the profile screen. Unfreezing in the future will be just as easy.

All three have basic accounts that are FREE. You do not need a paid subscription account with advanced features to freeze your credit.

To freeze your credit report, you need to visit the websites of each of the three major credit agencies (Experian, Equifax, Transunion). If you don’t have accounts with each of those, you’ll set them up first. If you have accounts, log in.
