I've been doing #genealogy since I was eight. I created this account along with "A Deck of Ancestors" blog, for participating in Amy Johnson Crow's #52Ancestors Challenge. (I'm also @vanderfluit.bsky.social)

The @bcgs.bsky.social participates in The Holten Project, writing biographies of Canadian soldiers with BC as their home province who are buried at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery in The Netherlands. Here's a recent contribution by my son and me. Private Willard Ellison, RIP. #RemembranceDay

I agree with the sentiment, but they just gotta be done.

When I get around to it. 🤣

My wife wore her great grandmother's veil from 1918. Years later, we learned it had previously belonged to my wife's great great great grandmother, who wore it in 1866!

I was looking for this graphic the other day. Now that I no longer need it, I came across it. #Homestead #genealogy #FamilyHistory

Today would have been my grandparent's 77th wedding anniversary. So almost 40 years since the big surprise party we had for them for their 40th. 😬

Egad! After many months of being weeks behind in the #52Ancestors Challenge for 2025, I not only caught up, but I jumped the gun on Week 46, with my Gx3 Grandmother, Anastasia Wormsbecker #genealogy #FamilyHistory

After months of being weeks behind, I've finally caught up with this year's #52Ancestors Challenge! I know so little about my maternal grandmother's great grandparents, it should be easy to keep up. I start with Franz Lerner. #Genealogy #FamilyHistory

My Great Great Grandmother, Margaret Heck, was born on April 1. I doubt she had any idea of what that signified or that she would have cared. She certainly didn't sound like a fool. #52Ancestors #genealogy #FamilyHistory

My Gx2 Grandfather, Jacob Anton, left the Russian Empire for Canada in 1912. Four years later, he and his brother returned to sell land they still had there. They were lucky to get out before the Revolution. #52Ancestors #Genealogy #FamilyHistory

The beginning and end of the story of my Great x2 Grandmother, Barbara Schmidt is a big enigmatic, but the middle part is pretty clear. 😆 #52Ancestors #Genealogy #FamilyHistory

I'm trying to find out more about the person who took this photo, "ФОТОГРАФЪ ХАДАКЪ" ("Photographer Khadak" or "Hadak"). Probably around 1875. 1/x

My Great Grandfather Michael Lerner, who was of German heritage, emigrated twice - first from the Russian Empire to the United States, and later from the US to Canada. #52Ancestors #Genealogy #FamilyHistory

We’ve reached the last card in the deck for my mother’s paternal line and the last of my Mormon ancestors who I’ll be looking at for this year’s #52Ancestors Challenge: Maria Hadlond. #Genealogy #FamilyHistory

TIL that my Great x 4 Grandmother is buried only a few hundred meters from Dred Scott and Adolphus Busch. Cool.

Sadly, she's also only a few hundred meters from Rush Limbaugh. 🤮 Well, there went the neighbourhood. 🙁

TL;DR: My Gx3 Grandfather Preston Thomas was first a slave owner and later a polygamist. I don’t like him.

Of course, it's a longer story than that. #52Ancestors #genealogy #FamilyHistory

Playing with FamilySearch full text search, I decided to start with my surname. I was surprised to see a hit was for an Arizona newspaper. As I know of no Vanderfluits in AZ in the '30s, I thought the hit was a transcription error. Nope, there was a Vanderfluit in Phoenix in 1930! 😮🤯🤔#genealogy

Is it really a "secret society" if they're advertising their meetings in the paper?
