WE live in a £3 trillion economy. The "boats" issue maybe costs less than 0.5% of our GDP. Shld we tackle the problem - yes; shld we control costs effectively; yes. Does it really warrant the 80% of media focus- absolutely not. #pmqs #gbnews
@anitaanand.bsky.social Loving this yrs #Reith. Your question re "elites" for me underlies our poor definition of the term. Elite for me, means making a difference for others not just grabbing power or money. @billgates.bsky.social not a bad example. #wato

What on Earth is this? An "in depth" BBC article about free speech in the UK that only cites examples of right-wing/ 'anti-woke' speech being suppressed. How can you mention Lucy Connolly but completely ignore Palestine Action / Just Stop Oil? Gob-smacking. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
How the simmering UK freedom of speech row reached boiling point
How did we reach a point where the UK is being compared to a 'tin pot Third World dictatorship'?

I am sorry that you were censored but imho you gave the best Reith lecture I have heard - even better than Southgate's. Very useful comments re how MAGA cooperate with other groups even where not in total agreement. Left constantly pettifog amongst themselves & rarely get power. #r4today
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Agree or disagree with @greenparty.org.uk, wouldn't it be nice if they had the same financial muscle and media coverage as Farage & his far right acolytes, as provided by Musk & other billionaires. Chip in if you want everyone to hear the full range of views. #bbcaq #bbcpm #gbnews
Hope is here, and this morning we've proved it.

In just 5 hours, our Crowdfunder has already hit our £100,000 target

But we're not done. We're doubling our target.

Let's take the fight to Reform this May.

We need proportional representation, proper limits on party expenditures and plurality of ownership of ALL media forms - max 5% controlled by one person/group. Maybe then we could call ourselves a democracy. HoL and monarchy can wait! #bbcaq #bbcpm

Huge respect to the papers for finding both an 88 year old worried about the tax bill on her 6 bedroom Kensington house and a 20 year old fretting about only being able to save £12k a year tax free.
Top work all around. These are not easy case studies to find.

Elephants need more space than zoos can provide.

So where should they go?

Europe's first large-scale elephant sanctuary is about to launch in Portugal, promising a place that the elephants can live out their final years with space and companionship www.ft.com/content/060a...
Meet Portugal’s newest retirees: elephants
Without space to roam, the world’s biggest land animals do not thrive — so what should happen to those in Europe’s zoos? One sanctuary has an answer

Nigel Farage has spent £1m taking out adverts in the papers to distract from the Nathan Gill Russian bribe scandal.

We can't let him buy himself out of this. We need an investigation into Russian influence in our politics.

@evanhd.bsky.social good interview #bbcpm with @zackpolanski.bsky.social Gave him a chance to clear up some of the nonsense printed about him in gutter press. Re GDP, it's like just looking at the revenue section of biz a/cs. You need also to look at capital AND intangibles like green spaces.

Such a waste of time and money. They either are a threat or they aren't! Need a closed room discussion of that - not public - and take action accordingly. Just ludicrous to tie resources up with another pointless enquiry! #pmqs #politicslive

Disgraceful coverage of the Maccabi Tel Aviv issue - Robinson’s rant was factually incorrect and hopelessly biased. The safety advisory group does NOT include local politicians and the ban was not motivated by political views. Stop making false narratives about Birmingham!! #r4today

Many on low incomes are effectively forced to BORROW to pay tax. Eg. VAT & fuel duty to get to work; Council Tax for living in- NOT owning- a home. They can't save or properly fund pensions. Tax LUXURIES like holiday flights or private healthcare; use cash to REDUCE taxes on lower paid. #r4today
4m people in England & Wales spend more on essentials than they earn.

580,000 have £50 left at the end of the month.

Result of low wages/benefits, austerity, unchecked profiteering.

1% have more wealth than 70% of the population combined.

Poverty is a political choice.

Am probably being very dim but when a person says: "it's not important", sometimes it actually means "this is REALLY important to me!" Am just wondering how AI generated "people" are going to cope with this! #questionoftheday #bbcaq
October 18, 2025 at 10:44 AM
Yes - the key issue will be : who OWNS the production/wealth created by an AI system. Perhaps compulsory part nationalisation of any such system, where EVERYBODY shares some of the proceeds, might help. Cld also be done thru differential taxation for AI related biz? #r4today #politicslive
How will Ai be used responsibly exactly?

To automate services? To boost productivity? This will all cause job losses, will make it easier to cut wages & fleece consumers

Unless we figure out how to live without income & jobs then I can’t see how Ai will be of benefit to most of us #r4today

The real blockers are the water profiteers – and Labour won’t touch them because it’s in bed with the lobbyists.

Ex-MPs like Angela Smith went from defending water firms to working for them. Current ministers have backgrounds in water lobbying.

Who do you think you’re fooling?
