The Manhattan Company, founded in 1799 to provide water to NYC, operated a bank that eventually became the Chase Manhattan Bank (now Chase). Tho the story was eventually refuted by the designer, Chase’s logo, resembling a cross-section of wooden pipe, was often cited as a nod to the bank’s origins.
