As a Buddhist, I believe that the nature of reality is non-dual and also, if they're against people protesting fascism, they’re on the side of you know what. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As ICE activity ramps up in Madison, I want to give a shout out to the Community Immigration Law Center: CILC, which provides free legal help to people facing deportation in Madison, WI. If you’re frustrated and looking for ways to help, I’m a proud supporter! www.cilcmadison.org!

Over 1.5 yrs ago, Pasang Yangjee Sherpa invited me to UBC, and Mabel Gergan, and Dolly Kikon, began talking about the question of Indigeneity and belonging in Nepal and Northeast India, and whether and how that frames our work. Fast forward 18 months and here we are! October 22nd, Madison, WI.

My 2nd most favorite thing about working in field conservation in the late 90s and early 2000s was that everyone expected a 2-week lag in email replies and communications. IT WAS UNDERSTOOD that you were in the forest no matter where you actually were. (Baby elephants were the 1st obviously.)

The highlight of my #Climateweek was hanging out with neustras hermana más amada, Nemonte Nequimo, who has served tirelessly to defend Indigenous rights to land,
life and cultural survival in the Amazon rainforest. Please check out her and Mitch’s work here: amazonfrontlines.org! 🙏

New week and I already need a timeline cleanse! Here’s Friday’s and today’s haul from the garden. (Just a woman standing in front of the internet asking that we pretend for one moment that the world is not on fire.)

The wild onion are taking over the lawn, re-indigenizing an alien deathscape with beauty and tenacity. I murmur encouragement when I can since there’s only so much re-wilding I can actively nurture in the yard and I’m stretched so thin these days.

Imagine that for a minute. A kaleidoscope of butterflies! An optical instrument, which mirrors pre-designed symmetry to create constantly changing patterns. We could be that kaleidoscope too - WE are the change. The world is full of possibilities. Never give up.

We feel suffocated by the knowledge that Life is being erased before our very eyes and we’re forced to be complicit as an audience to it all. But, did you know that a group of butterflies is sometimes called a kaleidoscope?

There is no avoiding this grief really, whether it is about butterflies, Palestine, Palchung (a Tibetan singer who has been abducted by PRC for singing about HHDL), or people being dragged into unmarked vans in the US.

Timeline cleanse with a back then vs now update:

We are dandelion seeds, millions of us dispersed in the wind, uncontainable tufts of information and energy. We evolved to survive forces that want to eradicate us. We learned to adapt to new ecologies by being beneficial.

How many of us are waiting?
May 8, 2025 at 4:55 PM
So much of what is harming us at a grand scale begins with hyper-individualism, which promotes self-interest over collective wellbeing. This worldview & its laser-like focus on individual rights over community needs is how & why we have made so little progress on basic humans rights in this country.

One of my favorite outcomes in the process of writing this paper is Pilar's representation of kincentric ecology and relational accountability with non-human beings and the natural world through a woodland floral design, drawing from her Menominee culture.
