Popular discourse attributes falling college enrollments to the rising cost of four-year college.

That story is wrong in multiple ways, as @mattbarnum.bsky.social points out in his latest roundup of the evidence (citing a new working paper of ours):

Is college enrollment plummeting?
Reports of the death of the bachelor’s degree have been greatly exaggerated.

Trump’s trip to Asia mostly resulted in promises and flattery. But promises alone don’t guarantee follow-through—and that’s often where Trump’s deals break down.

Trump Didn’t Quite Close the Deal on His Asia Tour
Trump came away with many promises, but everything will now depend on follow-through, which is where his deals often break down.

Systematic execution of hundreds in a hospital in Darfur, as RSF/Janjaweed take over the city of El Fasher (population ~250k) in Darfur.

That adds to an estimated 150,000+ death toll from fighting, plus many more from famine.

But Sudan is one of those places the outside world cares little about.

Even as someone who has become a bit less skeptical of AI overall, and probably less skeptical than the average person on this site, this absolutely has to be a bright line. If there are ethical uses of AI, grading is not and will not be one of them.
I strongly urge everyone to not just read this warning from @marcwatkins.bsky.social, but heed it, and be vocal and forceful pushing back against using AI to grade student writing. This must be anathema if we're going to have a world where learning means something. substack.com/inbox/post/1...

Semesterly reminder to everyone - Canvas in many cases defaults to showing students the course's grade distribution and student's place on it.

If you *don't* want your students to be aware of where they "rank" at all times, take a second to double check it's turned off.

Yes, being a faculty member is a hard job. I always tell my PhD students when they get jobs that teaching two (or more) classes a semester will be very tiring. Performance is a good analogy. It’s also one of the most rewarding jobs one could ever have.
