This year was the year I underestimated how much I love this band. My first introduction to TMBG would be finding a video post of Particle Man on Instagram but it wouldn't be until now where I became more interested in the band itself. Most of the credit to that has go to Homestar Runner, which is basically adjacent to TMBG now. Tiny Toons was there too but that's only a tiny blip in my history (pun intended) Now, any band's first album isn't always regarded as their best (and if it is then it's really sad they peaked early). It's no different for TMBG but in the way of ambition. While it's still packed with great melodies, snappy lyrics, and quirks a plenty, I feel like it's still a developmental album for the Johns, a way of doing every idea they have before they expand their brains into the minds they would become later with albums like Lincoln and Flood. It might also be their most "musicial limited" album, all they've got for this one are some synths, drum machines, Linell's trusty accordion, etc. But for 1986 standards, it's a stand-out for indie bands. A kind of voice that was hard to define but the Johns brought to life in a way only they could do. And they would only grow from here. TMBG 1986 (or the Pink Album as some call it) may not be their most ambitious compared to their later works but it's undeniably a remarkable introduction to this band's unique style of music. I never knew how much this sound really sounded like the way I do but now I know.

I remember this one back when I played it on the WiiU. And now that I finally have Steam account, I can revisit those memories and it's just as cute and also as dark as I remember it being! Not much else to say with this one as I don't want to spoil it. Check it out!

The second half of the 2012-2013 run and the original end of the series. Sometimes putting "Final" in your subtitle could become irrelevant when you decide to return. As a conclusion to the series, I think it does a bang up job wrapping things up! The pacing may be a little bit jank and rushed but I think everything comes around in the end. Even the word "ass" is back! That's what I read these books for! Now, even though this WAS ment to close the story, it isn't the end. We still got 3 more volumes to cover. But I'm glad Ted had the foresight to offer closure and intrigue into the future. Also Calpurnia is so fucking hot. Diversity wins! I know this series isn't perfect, doesn't have much substance in its character writing, and doesn't have any broader themes to it. But, sometimes, media doesn't have to be "deep" to become so beloved. I may have been too generous with my scoring on this series but that's only because I want other people besides me to appreciate the way I do. There's media you know is good but there's also media that sticks with you, regardless of quality. I think that latter part is just as worthy of conversations as the former half of that statement. The Courtney Crumrin series will always have a special place in my heart, alongside other series like Kamen Rider, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and Pokémon. Go and venture into the unknown.
