And not only because my first day in San Francisco was October 1, 1986 and my birthday is November 1 — October has always been my favorite month!

While the current national administration of the United States denies, denigrates and damages the LGBT community, our beloved little town of Grazalema in the Andalucían province of Cádiz in southern Spain celebrates its diversity. Thank you. It means a lot, always, to us — especially today.

….meanwhile, while cities like San Francisco and Palm Springs celebrate diversity and compassion, our national government is asking for citizens to turn people in. This is an actual post “tweeted” out today by Secretary Kristi Noem’s Department of Homeland Security.

Just finished watching Kevin Rolston’s final performance in Deal With The Dragon — my second time: Extraordinary. Without exaggeration and to tip into cliche it was a truly memorable tour-de-force. Bravo Kevin for an intense, funny, frank and fierce 60 minutes.

With the help of AI, my graphic haiku about today’s shameful and traitorous silence from Donald Trump about Russia’s attack on Kyiv — the largest aerial bombardment of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Hellish silence screams.
Heaven weeps; Putin murders.
Presidential shame.

Today in History: On May 24, 1976, Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the City” debuted in the San Francisco Chronicle—and the world met Anna Madrigal and 28 Barbary Lane!

Fun Fact: What started as a newspaper serial has grown into 9 novels, 3 miniseries, a Netflix reboot, and even a musical.

5 May 1945: the notorious Nazi concentration camp of Mauthausen, where 90,000 people including 5000 anti-Fascist Spanish prisoners died, is liberated. Its legacy figures centrally in “Thorns of the 15 Roses” the underway sequel to “Upon This Rock”.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom’s out there. Even though my “Mama” hasn’t been with me since 1979 & my “Grandma” since 1989, I think of them, miss them & hear their voices every day. Here they are as young and as I remember them: eternally beautiful & graceful in every age & memory.

6 May 1527: 147 Swiss Guard die protecting Pope Clement VII. Annually today, new recruits take their vows, delayed this year due to Pope Francis’ death. Clement & a Guard are central to my novel “Upon This Rock”, Francis, too, who blesses the gay protagonists.

Rewatching “The Two Popes” on Netflix: seemed appropriate. I haven’t seen it since I saw it in the big screen at Opera Plaza in San Francisco. I had forgotten how good it is, how prescient and how important ABBA is to the plot. 🙂
