Just identified this microwasp I swept from the Hawthorn hedge at Lauriston Farm. Turns out it's Torymus varians which eats hawthorn seeds - a phytophagous parasitic wasp! Rarely recorded, only one unconfirmed English record on NBN Atlas. #entomology #Edinburgh.

Platygaster subuliformis - a microwasp parasitoid attacking the pest Brassica pod midge (Dasineura brassicae). Recently found at Lauriston Farm, Edinburgh. Probably new for Scotland #entomology

Pleased to find that Lauriston Farm has a resident Water rail. Seen over a 5 day period foraging mostly during the day, sometimes at night. Has managed to escape the local weasel gang so far... #Edinburgh
